Background of the Study

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by challenges with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Early diagnosis and management of ASD can significantly improve the quality of life for affected children. Nurses play a crucial role in identifying signs of ASD and managing the care of children with this condition. This study will assess the role of nurses in identifying and managing Autism Spectrum Disorders in children, focusing on Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos State.

Statement of the Problem

Although nurses are integral in the early detection and management of Autism Spectrum Disorders, there is limited research on their specific role in identifying and managing ASD in Nigerian hospitals. This study aims to evaluate the role of nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos State, in diagnosing and managing children with ASD.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in identifying signs of Autism Spectrum Disorders in children.
  2. To evaluate the role of nurses in the management and care of children diagnosed with ASD.
  3. To explore the training and resources available to nurses for managing children with ASD.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in identifying Autism Spectrum Disorders in children?
  2. How do nurses contribute to the management and care of children with ASD?
  3. What training and resources are available to nurses for managing children with ASD?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses do not play a significant role in identifying Autism Spectrum Disorders in children.
  2. Nurses’ involvement in the management and care of children with ASD does not significantly affect patient outcomes.
  3. Training and resources available to nurses are not sufficient for effective management of children with ASD.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of nurses in identifying and managing ASD in children at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos State. Limitations include a limited sample size and a focus on a single hospital, which may not represent the broader healthcare system.
